Steve Aoki is a multi-hyphenate artist, entrepreneur and founder of Dim Mak Records. Born in Miami to Japanese parents, Aoki was raised in Newport Beach, California, where he discovered punk rock and DIY culture. In 1996, he launched Dim Mak from his college dorm room with a $400 loan from his father Rocky Aoki, founder of Benihana【353311151142780†screenshot】. Over the next decade, he built the label into a global brand by releasing music from indie bands and underground DJs, hosting raucous Dim Mak Tuesdays parties in Los Angeles, and championing boundary-pushing sounds. A relentless self-starter, he juggled music production with running the label, DJing and promoting shows, slowly carving out his space in the nascent electro-house scene.
His breakthrough came in the late 2000s when his remixes for Bloc Party and Kid Cudi caught the attention of dance floors worldwide. Aoki’s 2008 mix album Pillowface and His Airplane Chronicles and subsequent singles like “Warp 1.9” showcased his high-energy sound and set the stage for his debut studio album Wonderland. In 2012, Aoki released Wonderland, earning a Grammy nomination, and followed with the ambitious Neon Future series. Tracks like “Delirious (Boneless)” and “Pursuit of Happiness (Remix)” became festival staples and cemented his reputation for fusing electro-house with pop and hip-hop influences. Aoki’s relentless touring schedule — often exceeding 250 dates per year — made him one of the highest-grossing DJs in America【353311151142780†screenshot】.
Beyond the DJ booth, Aoki has leveraged his success into diverse ventures. He founded the Steve Aoki Charitable Fund to support brain science, disaster relief and humanitarian causes, and he serves on the board of the American Brain Foundation. His ventures include the fashion line Dim Mak Collection, investments in e-sports and tech startups, and partnerships in film and TV. Aoki is also a best-selling author, having published his memoir Blue: The Color of Noise, where he reflects on his upbringing, his father’s legacy and his own journey in music. He continues to push creative boundaries through collaborations with artists like BTS, Maluma and Blink-182, demonstrating his ability to bridge genres and cultures.
While he remains synonymous with cake-throwing and crowd-surfing antics, Aoki’s artistry transcends spectacle. Recent releases on his label Dim Mak and his side project Neon Future illustrate a mature sound that incorporates techno, trance and melodic bass while staying true to his signature energy. As he brings his “Aoki & Friends” showcase to Miami Music Week at E11EVEN, expect a night of relentless beats, surprise guest appearances and the inclusive party spirit that defines his brand. With over two decades of experience in the industry, Aoki continues to inspire the next generation of electronic artists while championing innovation and philanthropy.
